Q&A – Framework Update (March 31, 2026) – “Lion’s Roar”, Delay in Semester Start and Exam Rescheduling

Q&A – Framework Update (March 31, 2026) – “Lion’s Roar”, Delay in Semester Start and Exam Rescheduling

In recent weeks, multiple updates have been issued by the Technion administration, faculties, and teaching staff. The volume of information may at times be overwhelming or difficult to follow.
We would like to emphasize that many of the questions raised are addressed in the official guidelines and documents that have been published. We recommend reviewing these materials carefully.

At the same time, we recognize that this period is characterized by uncertainty. Ongoing challenges—both on campus and at home—may affect your ability to focus and maintain routine. A clear understanding of the academic framework may help reduce some of this strain.

To assist, we have compiled this Q&A page based on inquiries received in recent days.
The page provides focused information on the Spring semester schedule, course registration, completion of Winter semester exams, and the Summer semester.

We would also like to note that this period requires resilience from all members of the community. Resilience is the ability to acknowledge, at the same time, “this is difficult for me” and “I have the strength to cope.”

If you require support, the Center for Counseling & Support is available and offers a range of services. We encourage you to make use of these resources as needed.

Students are expected to continue their studies to the extent possible. At the same time, we are aware that many of you are balancing academic commitments alongside work, reserve duty, family responsibilities, and volunteer activities. These efforts are recognized and appreciated.

Spring Semester 2025/26
1. Do we already know when the Spring semester will end?

At this stage, the exact end date is not yet known and will be determined once regular activity resumes.
This is due to the fact that certain events—such as Entrepreneurship, Career and Social Day, may not take place on campus. If studies continue online, these days will instead be used for regular classes, which may allow the semester to conclude earlier. The same consideration applies to Student Day (which we very much hope will take place during the semester).

Once a final decision is made, it will be published accordingly.
In any case, the semester will conclude prior to the start of the Spring Moed A examination period, scheduled for July 26, 2026.

2. Will there be changes to the order of Spring semester exams?

The order of exams will remain unchanged. All exams will be postponed by approximately two weeks and are scheduled to begin on July 26, 2026.

A detailed exam schedule will be published once regular activity resumes.
The schedule is not being finalized at this stage in order to ensure that no further postponements will be required. Each update to the academic systems involves substantial administrative work, and at present, staff are focused on emergency operations.

3. Will there be midterm exams during the Spring semester?

Only grading components (“Magen”) will take place.
There will be no standard midterm exams.

Midterm exams will be held only in exceptional cases and subject to approval by the Dean of the School of Undergraduate Studies.

4. What is planned for the Spring semester timeline?

The period from the beginning of the Spring semester (April 12) until the start of the Spring examination period (July 26,2026) spans 14 weeks.

During this time:

  1. 12 weeks will be allocated for instruction.
  2. Two weeks will be designated as a break for Winter semester Moed B examinations.

Students who are not required to take Moed B exams during this period will not have scheduled classes.
In other words—if you do not need to take Moed B exams, you will have time off.

5. Will there be changes to Schedule Substitution Days?

Schedule Substitution Days may be adjusted.
For example, Sunday, May 3, 2026, is currently designated to follow a Sunday schedule. If exams are scheduled on that date, the Schedule Substitution Day may be moved earlier, to Sunday, April 26, 2026.

Updates will be published accordingly once decisions are finalized.

6. Will there be any changes to ceremonies?

The Dean’s and President’s Excellence Ceremony for the Winter semester has been postponed, in order to allow Moed B grades to be included in the determination of eligibility.

The Winter semester Outstanding Teaching Assistants Ceremony has also been postponed accordingly, as teaching evaluations are published only after the completion of Moed B exams, which have not yet been finalized.

The Holocaust and Heroism Remembrance Day ceremony will be pre-recorded and distributed to the Technion community.
Accordingly, the planned suspension of classes on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, is canceled, and classes will take place as scheduled.

The Holocaust and Heroism Remembrance Day siren will sound on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, at 10:00. The siren will last for two minutes, during which the public observes a moment of remembrance for the six million victims. Classes will pause during the siren as a mark of respect. In the event of a real alarm, a rising and falling siren will be heard.

Course Registration for the Spring Semester
1. I have not yet taken Moed B and am unsure which courses to register for in the Spring semester. What should I do?

Some students are uncertain whether to register for a course in the Spring semester that they have already taken in the Winter semester, and for which a final grade has not yet been determined (as Moed A or Moed B has not yet taken place).

In such cases, you should register for the course during the regular add/drop period.

At the end of the semester, students will be given the option to cancel registration for Spring semester courses that were already taken in the Winter semester.
Accordingly, you are advised to register for courses for which you are awaiting Moed B exam results.

Following the completion of Moed B and special exam periods, an additional option will be opened to cancel registration for Spring semester courses in cases where you were registered for the same course in both the Winter and Spring semesters and a late Winter semester grade has been received.

2. When will course registration take place?

As usual, the add/drop period will take place during the first two weeks of the semester. During this period, students may register for and cancel registration for all courses.

During the following two weeks, registration changes will still be permitted, except for laboratories, sports courses, and language courses.

The exact dates are published on the School of Undergraduate Studies website.

In light of the current situation, and the uncertainty regarding academic standing, no fees will be charged for changes made during the second add/drop period.

Completion of Winter Semester Exams
1. How will we know when the Winter semester exams will take place?

At this stage, it is not possible to determine exact dates, as scheduling is subject to Home Front Command guidelines.
All decisions are made in accordance with official directives and are contingent upon inspection and approval of protected spaces by authorized representatives.

In any case, a notice of at least five days will be provided in advance.

2. I received a notice that Moed A and Moed B exams originally scheduled for March 1, 2026, have been rescheduled to Friday, April 17, 2026. Why was this change made on short notice?

The decision was made in an effort to make use of the current ceasefire period and to help distribute the exam schedule more effectively for students. If it is possible to hold exams on the upcoming Friday, we aim to take advantage of this opportunity.

For the exams originally scheduled for March 1, 2026, students had already completed the relevant course material (as the war began the day prior), and therefore only review of the material is required at this stage.

In addition, some students require these grades in order to complete their degree, apply for admission to the Technion through transfer pathways, and for other academic purposes. We therefore consider it important to utilize this window of opportunity to support these needs.

3. Can there be scheduling conflicts between two Moed B exams on the same day?

No.
Exam days will be fully reassigned to new dates. Therefore, if there was no conflict between exams on the same day in the original schedule, there will be no conflict under the updated schedule.

4. Can the order of Moed B exam days change?

Yes!

Why? This is due to space constraints on campus. On a regular exam day, there are typically at least two exam sessions, whereas on Fridays there is only one. In each session, all available exam halls and classrooms across campus are fully utilized.

Originally, approximately 19 days were allocated for Moed B exams (15 as defined in the regulations, plus 4 additional days by exception). In order to avoid delaying the end of the Spring semester and its exam period into the Tishrei holidays, it was decided to allocate only two weeks for Moed B exams. This results in 12 days without classes, during which campus facilities will be fully available, allowing for two full exam sessions per day.

The remaining exams will be scheduled in parallel with classes, during an additional session held in the afternoon (starting at 17:00). On such days, only exams with relatively fewer students can be scheduled.

Accordingly:

  • Exams with a large number of students will be scheduled during the designated exam break.
  • Exams with fewer students will be scheduled alongside regular classes.

For this reason, it is not yet possible to publish a final exam schedule. The scheduling depends, among other factors, on whether exams will take place on specific days (e.g., Monday or Thursday), as the campus capacity varies between days with a single session and those with multiple sessions. This variation directly affects the order and distribution of exams.

5. What should I do if I have exams scheduled on consecutive days?

If you anticipate that you will need to take Moed B exams, we recommend beginning your preparation now. While study conditions may not be optimal, even gradual progress can be beneficial compared to not studying at all.

If you find it particularly difficult to concentrate, you may choose to take the next available exam date offered by the course staff or the next regular exam period.

If an additional exam date is offered, you are expected to take that exam rather than defer to the next regular exam period.

6. I am concerned about the academic study load of preparing for Winter Moed B exams alongside Spring semester studies.

We recognize that students who are required to take more than one Moed B exam may experience a significant academic load during this period.

Accordingly, course instructors have been asked not to schedule assignment submission deadlines during the designated exam break, as well as during the three days preceding and the three days following this period.

7. What if the war continues for an extended period?

This is a concern we share, first and foremost, as members of society. The Technion administration is holding ongoing discussions regarding the implications of a prolonged emergency situation.

Such circumstances have a direct impact on the continuity of academic activity at the Technion, both in teaching and in research, and constitute a significant disruption to daily life.

We hope for a prompt return to routine, while also preparing contingency plans for alternative scenarios. Updates will be provided as soon as possible at each stage.

Ongoing messages from the administration contain essential information for the immediate period ahead. We encourage you to review them carefully.

Summer Semester
1. Will a Summer semester take place?

Yes.

There is an overlap between the Spring semester Moed B exams and the first two weeks of the Summer semester. As a result, we anticipate that fewer students are expected to enroll in Summer courses. However, the Summer semester will still be offered, as we consider it an important option to maintain.

2. Which courses will be offered?

The list of courses will be published close to the opening of registration.

As in previous years, a Summer semester survey will first be conducted among students. The results will then be reviewed by the faculties, who will determine which courses can and will be offered. Following this process, the final course list will be published and registration for the Summer semester will open.
